Ask the staff for the daily special and order empanadas fresh; the team often recommends what’s best that day
Union Latino’s Food, an out-of-the-way Colombian restaurant for those in the know, is so authentic that when you enter, there’s a good chance you’ll be greeted in Spanish. In fact, there’s a good chance everyone in the restaurant, customers included, will be speaking Spanish. This is a good sign—it means you’re about to eat something straight out of South America. While you wait, you’ll see customers waving the menus away. They’re probably ordering coffee, which isn’t on the menu but is on almost every table, and bandeja paisa. The house specialty, this heaping platter comes with chimichurri’d steak, sausage, crispy pork belly, fried plantain, an arepa (cornmeal cake), rice, beans, avocado, and an egg. Empanadas are another must-order. Served with ahi, a fresh sauce full of cilantro, green onion and red chilies, Union’s empanadas are stuffed with potato and chunks of soft beef. Union also serves whole fried fish, seafood dishes, Colombian snacks such as tamales and buñuelos, and meat done a dozen different ways. With a dining area full of lively music and conversation, and food straight out of Abuela’s kitchen, this is a family restaurant at its finest.
Editorial Review
Union Latino's Food is a small, colourful counter-serve that tastes like someone transplanted a Colombian kitchen into suburban Surrey and refused to apologize. You order at the counter, pick a plastic-backed seat or take food to go, and what arrives is unapologetically Latin: crisp empanadas, salty fried tilapia on coconut rice, a hefty Bandeja Paisa and the guilty-pleasure salchipapa. The room buzzes with Spanish conversation and the staff—Camila, Sandra, Miguel—run the place like family, recommending daily specials and wrapping empanadas to go. Locals flock here around early evening for familiar flavors; visitors stumble in and leave feeling they've tasted something honest. It wears its roots plainly, a cultural anchor for the Colombian diaspora in Surrey rather than a touristy facsimile. Service is warm and efficient, though the rice can be uneven and music sometimes too loud. Still, this is comfort food with personality, the kind of spot you return to because it remembers your order and feeds more than appetite.
