Pro Tip
Drive Newton B. Drury Parkway and arrive at Lady Bird Johnson Grove early; pack warm layers as coastal fog and wind can be sudden
Redwood Park is your go-to for a quiet, peaceful walk. The trails are carved out for an hour to an hour-and-a-half-long walk among the groves of over 50 different species of trees from all over the world, including magnificent giant sequoias. Tucked away in South Surrey, this park is STUNNING, and has for the most part remained a hidden gem, meaning it’s a little less travelled than some of the bigger parks in the city. Be sure to pack a picnic as there are beautiful grassy meadows to host your al fresco lunch.
Editorial Review
Walk into Redwood National and State Parks and the world shrinks until only trunks and sky remain. These are trees that punch a hole in the horizon, draped in moss, ringing with wind and the slow, indifferent drip of fog. Follow Newton B. Drury Parkway into old-growth groves, climb the gentle loops of Lady Bird Johnson Grove, or watch the Klamath River tumble out to the coast — each turn feels curated by time, not tourism. Locals treat the parks like a sacred backyard: a place for weekend campfires, dawn runs, and quiet rituals of solitude. Visitors arrive with cameras and jaw-dropped wonder, often leaving with the weird, pleasant ache of perspective. The parks are also living cultural ground, ancestral to regional tribes and stewarded in partnership with the National Park Service; ranger-led programs thread natural history with human history. Bring layers, expect fog and cool wind even in summer, and leave room in your day to stand quietly beneath a tree that has seen centuries.
