You reach Barnston Island the way you should reach little islands of refuge: by a short, almost comically brief ferry that feels like an invitation to slow down. The Robert Point rest area is not a theme park; it is a weathered spit of grass, two picnic tables, a bike rack and a couple of honest restrooms, framed by farms and a quiet loop road that cyclists treat like a small devotion. I rode the flat, mostly paved 10 km circumnavigation and found blackberry thickets, a sandy stretch known locally as Barnston Bare, and long views across the Fraser toward the Golden Ears. Locals use it as a low-key Sunday ritual; visitors come for a half-day escape from the city. There are almost no services, no vendors, and a strong island etiquette—carry in, carry out. That scarcity is the point: Barnston Island holds a farmed, Indigenous-rooted rhythm inside the metro, a simple place where quiet matters and the ferry is part of the journey, not just the transit.
