Bring your own picnic gear and head to the grassy boat-launch area for the best river views; check open-house hours for guided tours.
Sitting on the banks of the Nicomekl River in Elgin Heritage Park in South Surrey, the Historic Stewart Farm is as close as you'll get to experiencing the life of Surrey’s pioneers in 1894-1910. Listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places, this is the only completely intact farm unit from the late 19th century remaining in Surrey. And it’s no ordinary farmhouse, either. Few heritage homes of this age in the Lower Mainland boast such elaborate architectural details as the Stewart farmhouse. The grounds of the farmhouse are impressive as well. There’s a pole barn with farm implements; apple and pear trees; heritage gardens bursting with scarlet runner beans, roses, snapdragons, calendulas and sunflowers; there’s even an old Hadden crab boat – a relic from the oyster farming and crab fishing days of old. Drop into the farmhouse and be greeted by a costumed guide. Tour the house at your own pace and we recommend exploring the park afterwards. Guided tours are available at various times.
Editorial Review
Tucked into Elgin Heritage Park beside the Nicomekl River, Historic Stewart Farm feels less like a museum and more like a family homestead frozen at the turn of the 20th century. You step off a walking trail onto weathered floorboards, guided by volunteers in period attire who’ll rattle off day-to-day details with practical kindness. The farmhouse and pole barn are modest and well preserved; out back, picnic tables and a grassy boat launch open onto river views and mountain silhouettes. Seasonal quirks — a model train exhibit in winter, Christmas displays, summertime children’s programs and occasional tea service — keep the place lively without turning it into a showpiece. Locals come for quiet walks, family outings and kayak way-points; visitors come to touch a slice of early Canadian settlement. It’s community stewardship more than spectacle, an anchor for heritage education and simple pleasures: cookies on a bench, an easy trail, and the patient, unflashy work of keeping a small history alive.
